Oil and water don't mix - unless you add an emulsifier. The same is true for people with different perspectives.
After 30 years teaching cooking to 50,000+ students, I've seen how cooking teaches us about bringing different elements together.

Conversation acts as the emulsifier in our relationships, bringing together different elements to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “like oil and water”—two things that just don’t mix. But if you’ve ever made a simple vinaigrette, you know that’s not exactly true.
With the right element—an emulsifier like mustard or egg yolk—those separate ingredients come together, creating something entirely new: smooth, balanced, and whole.
We’re like that as humans, too. On the surface, we might seem separate—different opinions, experiences, backgrounds, different ways of seeing the world. But conversation is our emulsifier. A shared meal, a genuine exchange, a moment of true listening—these are what bring us together in ways we never expected, creating something richer than we ever could alone.
Some of the deepest connections I’ve ever witnessed have started over a shared experience. A conversation that begins with small talk but unfolds into something meaningful. A group of strangers who find common ground through laughter, a story, or even the simple act of passing a plate.
Food has always been one of my favorite ways to bring people together, but it’s not the only one. We connect when we slow down, when we listen, when we stay open to something (or someone) unexpected. It’s in the willingness to mix, to blend, to see what new possibilities emerge when we come together.
Food teaches us this truth over and over: sometimes, what seems like a contradiction is actually what brings balance.
It’s where the magic happens. We just have to be willing to stir things up, to invite in something unexpected, to connect.
This week, maybe start small:
✨ Ask a question you’ve never asked.
✨ Cook with someone you wouldn’t normally cook with.
✨ Pause a little longer before responding.
Because connection, like food, is built on contrast—on bringing different elements together and finding the harmony between them.
Where do you see this in your own life? A moment where contrast—something unexpected—brought harmony?
