One year after my father's death, I'm learning that grief and gratitude aren't opposites - they're dance partners.
After 30 years teaching cooking to 50,000+ students, I've learned that the most meaningful flavors - and moments - hold both bitter and sweet.

Life's most meaningful moments are often bittersweet, holding both joy and sorrow, and it's in embracing both that we find depth.
Life, much like the food we create, is full of contrasts. There are moments of sweetness that fill us with joy, but there are also times when bitterness seeps in—whether it’s through grief, loss, or challenge. And yet, it is through this juxtaposition of sweetness and bitterness that we grow, evolve, and find depth in our experiences.
As I reflect on this, this October marks one year since my dad unexpectedly passed away. His loss has brought a bittersweetness to my life—grief mixed with gratitude, sorrow mixed with love. My parents always taught me to look for the silver lining, no matter how difficult the situation. In the year since his passing, I’ve found myself reflecting on that lesson, trying to embrace both the bitter and sweet moments as part of the richness of life.
Although I feel that I’m only now beginning to come into that space of acceptance. This past year has been filled with so much grief and sorrow, but I’m learning to embrace the moments of sweetness, even if they’ve been hard to see. I’m deeply grateful to all of you for your patience, support, and presence—whether through kind words, a simple check-in, or just allowing me the space to heal in my own time.
Just as in cooking, where bitter and sweet ingredients balance to create a more complex and satisfying dish, life’s bitter moments help shape who we are, bringing clarity to the sweetness that follows. Think about a time when you experienced both joy and sadness at once—perhaps a graduation, someone moving away, even the end of a weekend . These bittersweet moments have a profound impact on us, just as the right balance of flavors can transform a dish from ordinary to extraordinary.
In this exploration of bittersweet, I'm embracing how embracing both the sweet and bitter aspects of life can lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling experience.
